Today I remembered that it was time I got my free annual credit report. (Not to be confused with the ‘freecreditreport’ people with the obnoxious television commercials, which isn’t actually free).

The site linked allows you to get one check-up per year at the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax and Transunion) to see if there is anything out of the ordinary, like accounts you didn’t know you opened, or even credit requests from people you’ve had no business with. (The latter stops pretty quickly when you opt out of recieving credit offers. Well mostly. For reasons unknown Chase seem to be a special case and require repeated shouting at until they finally cease.

Because I only use this service once a year, I tend to forget things like my login credentials. (As a sidenote, I’m always puzzled when websites claim I get the answer to security questions like “What is your fathers middle name” incorrectly). So I ended up calling the 1-877 numbers for each service to speak to some very nice indian
people to get my accounts verified/unlocked/reset/whatever.

Credit reports are incredibly dull. At least, as long as they contain what you expect them to. It’s always anticlimactic to see nothing out of the ordinary, but in a good way.

The only thing that raised an eyebrow this year was Equifax claiming..

Total Available Credit: NaN

Impressive.
